GRACM: Postgraduate Certificate
Course introduction
The Postgraduate Certificate in Global Risk Analysis and Crisis Management provides participants with unique insights and fundamental skills required for mastering the field of global risk analysis, early warning and the management of major man-made and natural disasters. The programme is offered in an online format, with the 5 modules spread from October through December. All Modules are held fully online. This Postgraduate Certificate in Global Risk Analysis and Crisis Management is a programme of which the degree will be awarded by Vesalius College.
Course overview
All modules are online. The course offers online lectures and activities, including discussions and simulations. For every module the course follows the same structure:
Preparation: week before the training (around 2 hours/day)
Participants will spend around 10 hours preparing for each module. This preparation will include getting familiar with the topic by reading, watching videos and setting-up the tools that will be used during the training, etc.
Session 1: Saturday morning (09:00-12.30)
A first live online session will be run by the trainer. The live session will be mainly focused on theories, but it will also include exercise and activities.
Session 2: Sunday morning (09:00-11:00)
A second live online session will be run by the trainer. This session will be mainly focused on practical activities and in applying the learned theories into practice.
Roundtable: Wednesday (18:30-19:30)
Participants will be engaged in an online roundtable session with practitioners from the field.
Learning objectives
Participants will develop essential academic and transferable skills which are ideal for an academic or policy career in international relations, diplomacy and global governance.
- Understanding of core concepts and theories of crisis and risk management.
- Knowledge of core state/non-state actors, organisations and players in crisis and risk management.
- Knowledge of tools, skills and frameworks required for professional and academic research in crisis and risk management.
- Acquisition of academic writing and policy communication skills.
- Ability to confidently develop and apply ideas and arguments emanating from theory, concepts and paradigms in the formulation of academic and/or policy-relevant analyses.
- Ability to demonstrate and apply professional skills through scenario exercises and simulations.
- Ability to demonstrate ethical considerations and societal implications of key approaches to crisis and risk management.
- Ability to effectively communicate ideas, recommendations and arguments in a convincing, precise and effective manner in written and oral form.
- Ability to work effectively in a team for the purposes of problem solving and policy communication, while demonstrating intercultural awareness and sensitivity to different cultural backgrounds and perspectives.
Entry requirements
Admission to this Postgraduate Certificate is highly selective. Candidates should either have a Master’s degree, or have a Bachelor’s degree plus the equivalent of 3 years’ work experience. Applicants are selected on the basis of the information provided in their CV and motivation letter.
