The Reordering of International Relations: The Indo-Pacific and Europe in an Era of Strategic Competition

The People’s Republic of China (PRC) has become a critical state for the reordering of international relations. Its strategic competition and rivalry with the United States (US) are having a profound effect on security and stability in the Indo-Pacific. Taiwan is often presented as a strategic flashpoint of these tensions. However, beyond the Indo-Pacific region, China’s growing power and assertiveness are having an impact on European security through its deepening relations with Russia and its role in the war on Ukraine. Actors in the Indo-Pacific and Europe should reflect on the changing inter-theatre dynamics and explore ways to collaborate further to avoid the extreme consequences of these tensions. Against this backdrop, the National Chengchi University (NCCU) and the Centre for Security, Diplomacy and Strategy (CSDS) organised a public event on 18 September 2024, that brought together experts and policymakers to reflect on the following questions:

• How should we understand China-US competition from a strategic perspective?
• What are the implications of this competition for the Indo-Pacific region and Europe?
