Economic Security and Space

On 24 May 2024, the Centre for Security, Diplomacy and Strategy (CSDS) organised an event to explore the economic security dimensions of space in a European context. The ability to reduce strategic dependencies, secure relevant supply chains and have autonomous capabilities in space, especially in satellites and launchers, is a fundamental prerogative for the economic growth of the European continent, as well as for its security and defence ambitions. To discuss this highly relevant issue, CSDS brought together key stakeholders in European space policy. Using a triple helix approach, the event featured the presentation of a CSDS Policy Brief published by Prof. Antonio Calcara, Head of the Geopolitics and Technology Programme at CSDS and Giovanni Tricco, PhD Researcher at the Vrije Universiteit Brussel (VUB) and the University of Bologna, followed by a discussion with academics, EU officials and members of business and industry.

The event was organised by the Geopolitics & Technology programme at CSDS. The event was supported by a European Research Council Starting Grant on Competition in the Digital Era (CODE) led by Prof. Antonio Calcara.
