Sino-American Competition and European Strategic Autonomy

On 24 and 25 October 2023 the ERC project on Sino-American Competition and European Strategic Autonomy (SINATRA), led by Prof. Luis Simon, kicked off with a two-day workshop. The opening workshop was co-hosted by the Centre for Security, Diplomacy and Strategy (CSDS) of the Brussels School of Governance and the Robert Schuman Centre for Advanced Studies (RSCAS) at the European University Institute (EUI).

This project examines how the US and China influence European policies in the economic, technological and diplomatic realms and the extent to which Europe can exercise autonomy in a context of great power competition.

The closed-door kick-off meeting brought together European, American and Asian scholars to present early research findings and empirical work, as well as to test early assumptions with relevant policymakers.
