Parliamentary Engagement Strengthens Democracy in the Indo-Pacific

The Indo-Pacific is vital for the European Union’s interests as the world’s largest and most populous region, with increasing political, economic, and geostrategic importance. Current dynamics in the Indo-Pacific have given rise to intense geopolitical competition adding to increasing tensions on trade and supply chains, as well as in technological, political, and security areas. In this respect, stability and prosperity of the Indo-Pacific region matters to the EU and our geopolitical interests.

The EU Strategy for Cooperation in the Indo-Pacific can be a valuable tool to effectively assert the EU’s presence and influence in the region through furthering strategic ties and deepening cooperation. It should allow the EU to adapt and build its cooperation with different partners according to specific policy areas in which common ground based on shared principles, values, or mutual interest can be found. This includes the war in the Ukraine and its impact on the relationship.
