Yusuke Ishihara

Yusuke Ishihara is Senior Fellow, Policy Studies Department at the National Institute for Defense Studies (NIDS). He specialises in the international relations of the Asia-Pacific, Japanese foreign and security policy, and IR concepts. He holds a PhD from Australian National University. His most recent publications include Yusuke Ishihara, ed., Indo-Pacific at a Crossroads: The Return of Inter-Bloc Rivalries, or the Rise of Competitive Pluralization, (Tokyo: NIDS, 2026), and “Two Nixon Shocks and Postwar Bargains” (a Japanese journal article), Kokusaiseiji, Vol. 208, (February 2026), pp. 64-79. The topics of his ongoing research projects include the transition of the U.S. hegemonic order in the 1970s, the evolving minilateral network in the Asia-Pacific, and Japan’s relative material decline. He has defence policy experience in positions including Deputy Director, International Policy Division (2014-2015), Senior Fellow of Policy Simulation Office, and the Consultant for Japan-US Defence Cooperation Division and International Policy Division (2026).
