New Horizons of the Nuclear Age: Nuclear and Strategic Stability in the New Political Environment

On 5 February 2025, CSDS hosted a closed-door discussion with Prof Ichimasa Sukeyuki and Dr Kurita Masahiro from Japan’s National Institute for Defense Studies (NIDS), who presented the report New Horizons of the Nuclear Age (NIDS, 2024). Participants exchanged on the challenges of an increasingly complex global nuclear landscape, including questions related to strategic stability, the impact of emerging technologies, as well as extended deterrence and arms control. Specific attention was paid to similarities and differences between the European and Indo-Pacific theatres, as well as the implications of adversarial alignments across the two regions.

The event was part of the “Japan Chair Cluster” series, which bring together Brussels-based experts and policy practitioners from the EU institutions, NATO, as well as relevant Embassy representatives interested in Japan and the broader Indo-Pacific region. The Cluster meets on an ad hoc basis when experts, academics and officials from the region visit Brussels, presenting their research and sharing their insights in a closed-door, informal fashion. The aim of the meetings is to inform the European policy community, raise awareness and steer the debate for regional security challenges, as well as to facilitate inter-personal exchanges to support Europe’s engagement with Japan and the Indo-Pacific.
