VUB-KMS research: Fake news is detrimental to confidence in corona vaccines and hope for economic recovery

The current health crisis is proving to be the ideal stage for many conspiracy theories. Not only anti-vaccination movements, but also state actors such as Russia and China are trying to create confusion by spreading falsehoods about the origin of the virus or the side effects of the vaccines. For example, thousands of Flemish people recently received “De Prikkrant” in their letterbox, issued by an anti-vaccination organization with the aim of questioning the effectiveness and safety of the vaccines. A joint study by the VUB (Professor Caroline Buts and Professor Olesya Tkacheva) and the Royal Military Academy (Pieter Balcaen and Professor Cind Du Bois) examined the effect of these disinformation campaigns on the confidence of both citizens in the vaccine and consumers in the economic recovery.
